Mission and Faith Formation

Throughout the year, our local parish priests have celebrated Masses and liturgies, including an early morning Mass on the fourth Wednesday of each month, as well as Reconciliation for selected Year 7 classes. The Passionist Youth Team delivered a series of one-day retreats for students in Years 7 to 10, focusing on:

  • Year 7: Relationships for the Future
  • Year 8: Self-Discovery
  • Years 9 & 10: Masks: Pathway to Authenticity

Our Year 12 students attended a three-day retreat at Bonny Hills, facilitated by MCC staff and based on The Road to Emmaus from Luke’s Gospel. Through whole-group sessions, students explored key themes from the Emmaus story, including transitions and liminality, resilience, companionship, and encounter.

Outreach

Under the leadership of senior students, the St Vincent de Paul chapter conducts a variety of fundraising and outreach initiatives. The St Agnes Conference members worked enthusiastically and creatively to raise funds for both the Vinnies Winter and Christmas Appeals, making a meaningful impact on those in need.

Curriculum

Building on the strong foundation of Living Well, Learning Well and the development of collaborative teams of learners, our focus this year has been on empowering students to take ownership of their learning journey. Middle Leaders and staff teams have worked to enhance students’ understanding of purposeful learning by encouraging them to:

  • Articulate what they are learning
  • Reflect on their progress
  • Identify the steps needed for improvement

Through a coherent, school-wide approach that fosters independent learning, we are helping students recognise the value of feedback. By actively refining their skills and understanding, they can drive their own success with confidence and purpose.

The consolidation of literacy initiatives and targeted goals across all teaching teams has led to significant improvements in NAPLAN, PAT, and eWrite results, with particularly strong growth in reading performance. These achievements have been further strengthened by the success of our reading program and the targeted focus on numeracy through Manga High. Teaching teams are using this data to shape and enhance student learning experiences.

Looking ahead, we remain committed to ensuring growth for every student, equipping them to become confident, capable, and independent learners with a hope-filled future.

Pastoral Care

A student’s wellbeing and learning thrive when they feel a strong connection to their school. Creating an environment where every student experiences this sense of belonging is a shared responsibility—one that includes staff, parents, and students. This begins with a commitment to helping others flourish first.

At the forefront of this work are the Leaders of Student Care, who guide the six houses. Initiatives such as regular house meetings, house Masses, and house BBQs for breakfast and lunch have enriched student life at McCarthy. Signature events, including the Colour Run at the end of Term 1, the Olympics Day at the end of Term 2, and the Christmas Carols on the final day of school, have further strengthened the fabric of our College community.

Most importantly, the Leaders of Student Care oversee a dedicated team of mentor teachers, ensuring that students start each school day well. By addressing potential barriers to learning in a consistent, coordinated, and sustained manner, this team plays a vital role in student wellbeing.

House Captains, alongside other senior students, are instrumental in fostering a welcoming and connected environment for younger students. Rather than focusing solely on major events like the athletics and swimming carnivals, senior students now prioritise building relationships within their houses—helping junior students feel valued, cared for, and respected. Our student leaders this year have done an outstanding job, setting a strong example of servant leadership for future cohorts to follow.

While the wellbeing of our students is a collective responsibility, the Pastoral Team leads this mission with dedication and care. Their ongoing commitment to fostering a supportive and connected school community continues to make a meaningful difference.
